Many potential pathogens are encountered and inadvertently ingested every day as we eat and drink. These pathogens constantly try to invade our bodies and cause infections. Generally, most pathogens will be damaged and killed by gastric acid after reaching the stomach. However, there are always a few pathogens that pass through the stomach relatively unharmed. When these pathogens eventually reach the intestine, beneficial bacteria already present and special proteins called immunoglobulins act as defenders to oppose and eliminate these foreign attackers. Therefore, improving the function of intestinal defenses against the various invading pathogens is one of the most important ways to maintain the health of the gastrointestinal tract (GI) and the human body(1).
