Arthritis is usually treated with anti-inflammatory drugs, which is one of the best ways to alleviate pain and suffering associated with the disease(3). In the US, it is estimated that over 40 billion aspirin tablets and more than 100 million doses of Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) are used to ameliorate the inflammation associated with arthritis(4, 5). However, the choice of NSAID must be made very carefully, otherwise, serious side effects such as damage to gastrointestinal mucosa and kidneys can occur. Furthermore, NSAIDs have been shown to inhibit the agglutination of platelets, resulting increased risk of hemorrhaging  (6, 7).

In the past few years, the nutritional supplement industry has emphasized the development of glucosamine and chondroitin in the marketplace. As a result of clinical support detailed in the scientific literature, consumers’ preference for these products has increased greatly(8, 9). However, although the use of glucosamine to relieve the symptoms of arthritis is well documented, there are also scientific reports showing that glucosamine may interfere with normal glucose metabolism(10, 11). In addition, these products usually contain sodium and/or potassium; therefore, people with heart and kidney problems should consult their doctors prior to long-term use.

Because of the side effects often associated with drugs, health foods are viewed as an attractive and viable option. By choosing health foods that can relieve arthritis, not only do we obtain benefits, but will also have fewer worries regarding side effects associated with long term use, all of which are key points to consider when considering this type of health food.
